We begin with a troubling story out of California. The arrest of a Chinese-born couple discovered to have 21 kids inside this castle-like mansion near Los Angeles. Now accused of what the district attorney calls horrific punishment and beatings and child abuse. The kids, almost all born via the largely unregulated world of surrogacy, are now in protective custody. And the couple, which was the subject of a CBS News investigation just last month, remain behind bars tonight, facing multiple charges. CBS's Jonathan Vigliotti has our full report. Prosecutors call it a house of horrors, a sprawling California home just east of Los Angeles, where they say at least 14 children born through surrogacy were subjected to repeated abuse. Police today arrested 39-year-old Sylvia Zhang and 66-year-old Guojun Xuan. The investigations revealed that the children were being physically abused by Xuan and live-in nannies, which was encouraged by suspects Xuan and Zhang. The case began in May 2025 after Zhang brought a two month old baby to a hospital with severe head injuries. She appeared to be untruthful with hospital staff about how the injury was sustained in the hospital. Staff notified law enforcement authorities. Police then searched the couple's sprawling Arcadia home and found children ranging from two months to over four years old. Authorities say surveillance video showed children being physically abused by nannies inside the home. As part of a CBS News investigation, a neighbor told Sunday morning she witnessed abuse and called police four times. You saw her yelling and then she was holding the baby because the baby was screaming and she was just shaking it. She was just shaking, shaking, shaking the baby. The couple was initially arrested last year, but released while authorities continued investigating. And Xuan's attorney says his client is innocent. He is blaming the abuse on a nanny. The couple tonight are each being held on a $20 million bond, Tony. Jonathan, thank you very much.

We have news tonight on Christa Pike, the convicted killer who survived not one but two lethal injections last week in Tennessee, is now conscious and speaking, according to her lawyers. CBS's Tom Hanson has late developments. Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike is conscious and speaking tonight, days after the failed execution. Her lawyers revealed that despite damage to her arms, she is still handcuffed and shackled to the bed in her Nashville hospital. Last Wednesday night, Pike survived two rounds of lethal injection. She was left unconscious and on a ventilator. Her attorneys had warned authorities that Pike had specific challenges with her veins. The least that could happen now is that we at least take death off the table and start looking for what the future could be for her. The episode prompted the state's top corrections officer to resign. It was the second time since May that Tennessee has failed trying to execute a prisoner. It's a tragedy. And it's deeply disturbing to me that that has happened in this state. The people deserve better than that. Pike, now 50, has been on death row for more than 30 years. She was convicted of brutally torturing and murdering her classmate, 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. And Governor Bill Lee has halted Tennessee executions for the rest of the year and ordered an outside investigation. But Pike's lawyers want him to go further and commute her sentence to life without parole, Tony. Tom, thank you.

Cornell University, under growing criticism of how it handled that alleged frat house gang rape, has hired a former top justice official to lead what it calls an independent review. Here's CBS's Lilia Luciano with what more we're learning tonight. Calls for accountability getting louder on campus. The attorney for Jane Doe tells CBS News his client has received death threats since filing a civil lawsuit alleging she was sexually assaulted at a Cornell University frat house in 2024. This comes as university faculty members introduced a rare no-confidence vote in the administration's handling of the internal investigation. ABC News obtained a recorded phone call between Jane Doe and one of the accused men, Winston Lee, made three weeks after the alleged incident. On that call, Lee tells her... I feel so bad for you, dude. I actually, like, right afterwards, they told me not to message you because they thought you were going through a lot. Jane Doe responds, I was completely and totally intoxicated, adding, I was surrounded by upwards of 8 to 10 men. This is classified as a gang rape. Lee acknowledged he had sexual contact with Jane Doe, but said it was consensual, saying he told Jane Doe, if you're uncomfortable and you don't want to do this, that's perfectly OK, stating she replied, no, it's fine. We're all consenting adults here. In an interview with Cornell Police, Jane Doe said she consumed ketamine, an anesthetic and popular party drug. She describes that it felt like she was floating above herself and it was like an outer body experience. In her sworn statement to Cornell Police, Jane Doe says more than a week before the alleged assault, Lee and another one of the men she accuses offered her ketamine. and that Lee said the drugs came from someone who worked in a Cornell lab. CBS News obtained records that show less than a day before the alleged sexual assault, Cornell police made an arrest at the same frat house after a report of drugs. CBS News has reached out to all of the men accused, including Winston Lee. Lee has not responded. We have heard back from the attorneys for two of the men who were named in that lawsuit. They deny the allegations. Tony. Lilia, thank you.

In other news, there's video tonight of an Arizona state cheerleader shoved and pinned to a bicycle by officers, then placed under arrest. Here's CBS's Carter Evans on what happened. The viral video starts with a violent push. That's former Arizona State cheerleader Erin Bonner confronting Tempe police as they handcuff her boyfriend for allegedly fighting back in July. The officer then pushes her on top of a bike. They struggle and he throws a punch. Days later, Tempe police released body cam and surveillance video showing the seconds leading up to the incident. Officers repeatedly told Bonner to back up. And multiple cameras caught a clear shot of the punch. He's on top of her. He throws a hard punch to her face, causing her to have black eyes. And there's no need for this. This is extremely excessive. Bonner's attorney, Benjamin Taylor, says after the video was released, the county prosecutor declined to file charges against her. But Bonner filed a complaint against the police, alleging excessive force and accusing the officer of groping her. Now, more than two months later, the city of Tempe is charging Bonner with disorderly conduct and interfering with police. Why do you think the city decided to move forward with this? To prevent a civil lawsuit and to cover up for their officers wrongdoing by punching and groping Ms. Bonner. This is definitely retaliation against Ms. Bonner. Now, Tempe police say the two month delay in charges is the result of the city attorney's office thoroughly reviewing the evidence. And they also say that it has nothing to do with the groping accusation. Bonner has pleaded not guilty. Tony? Carter, thank you.

We're back with the good stuff tonight. Our favorite new marker of fall has arrived and it nicely doubles as a mental health break from another fall election season. It happens when a guy from Maine named Jody Hartman rakes his leaves into a big old pile and then gives his dogs the go ahead. That's Stella and Mabel, a pair of yellow labs who have been leaf jumping since 2015, inspiring tens of millions of us, including our own Steve Hartman, who on the road a couple years ago declared Stella and Mabel's leaf jumping everything fall should be. And guess what, folks? Fall is here as of this week. Stella and Mabel's first jump of 2026. It was a good one and almost certainly the first of dozens this leaf season, including a few games of hide in the pile, lie on the pile, and what Steve called the periscope of hope, all of which Jody helps extend by curing the leaves with a hairdryer and then covering them with a tent to protect that special rustle. But the work is worth it, he says, because the joy of those jumps goes both ways, and there may be a lesson in it. Dogs, you know, unfortunately they don't live anywhere near as long as we do, but they live in the moment. They don't sit around worrying like we do, and it really reminds me of that. Us too, Jody. Finally a good reason to rake the yard.
